The earliest known valentine gift still around today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his partner while he was locked up in the Tower of London. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent out each year, making Valentine's Day the second biggest card-sending vacation of the year.
