I've always wondered where Valentine's Day originated from, and under those circumstances, an individual could be forgiven for believing it was developed to develop more service when Christmas is over.
St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman custom. Our last possiblity for the origins our holiday: It could be that we celebrate Valentines Day on the 14th because this is the day that St. Valentine died. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent out each year, making Valentine's Day the 2nd largest card-sending vacation of the year. A lots red roses stays the classic Valentine's Day favorite (ok, it's a toss up in between roses and chocolate - but we all knwo why chocolate is).
To that, we'd say: You don't have to choose between the two! Give your partner a night (or day) to remember, then top it all off with a small but special Valentine's Day present. Don't forget that this day is to be shared between the two of you, so you can cater the gift for your partner or find something the two of you can enjoy together! After all, on February 14, going a little over the top with great gifts for husbands or gifts for wives is never a bad idea. (And if you're running a little late, check out our last-minute Valentine's Day gifts too.)

The Eastern individuals's custom of exchanging love letters on February 14 is another theory connecting love and Valentine's Day. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Europeans believed that birds started to mate on February 14.
Whatever your Valentine's present to get or give, have a good time this holiday of love - may this bit of history contribute to your satisfaction!

By the seventeenth century, handcrafted cards were intricate and large, while store-bought ones were smaller sized and expensive.
