As Christianity spread, so did the Valentine's Day card. The earliest extant card was sent out in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his other half while he was a detainee in the Tower of London. It is now in the British Museum.
Saint Valentine who had throughout his life emerged the sensation of love by tying nuptial bonds opposed the king's directions. He decided to penalize saint Valentine by putting him to death on 14th February.

The history of Valentine's Day-- and its client saint-- is shrouded in secret. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, includes vestiges of both Ancient and christian Roman tradition. Our final possiblity for the origins our holiday: It could be that we commemorate Valentines Day on the 14th since this is the day that St. Valentine passed away. According to the Greeting Card Association, an approximated one billion valentine cards are sent out each year, making Valentine's Day the 2nd largest card-sending vacation of the year. A dozen red roses stays the classic Valentine's Day favorite (ok, it's a toss up between roses and chocolate - but we all knwo why chocolate is).
What about your kids? What Valentines present will you provide to them this year? Will you demonstrate your love with the standard box of their preferred sweet or a colorful red rose? Or will you purchase a brand-new video game? Perhaps a card with a hand composed note will be the method you'll express your affection to them this year.
